Israel-Iran War Updates – March 10: U.S. Destroys 16 Iranian Mine-Laying Vessels Near Strait of Hormuz

The United States military said it destroyed multiple Iranian naval vessels, including 16 mine-laying boats, near the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz as tensions continue to escalate in the Israel-Iran conflict.

According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the vessels were suspected of preparing to deploy naval mines in the narrow waterway, one of the most important global shipping routes for oil and gas. The strikes were part of ongoing operations aimed at preventing disruptions to international maritime traffic.

Footage released by the U.S. military showed precision strikes hitting several Iranian vessels, many of which were reportedly stationary at the time of the attack. Officials said the operation was conducted to ensure the safety of commercial shipping passing through the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world’s most vital energy corridors, with roughly 20% of global seaborne oil trade passing through the narrow passage between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. Any attempt to mine the waterway could severely disrupt global energy markets.

U.S. officials warned that further attempts by Iran to deploy mines or interfere with tanker traffic would trigger additional military responses. Washington has repeatedly emphasised the importance of keeping the shipping lane open.

Iranian authorities have previously threatened to block the strait in response to U.S. and Israeli military operations, stating they could use missiles, submarines and naval mines to halt the movement of hostile fleets.

The development comes amid the second week of intense fighting between Iran, Israel and U.S. forces, with missile exchanges, air strikes and naval operations spreading across several parts of the Middle East.

Analysts say any prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could significantly impact global energy supplies and push oil prices sharply higher.
