Three Months After IndiGo Meltdown, CEO Pieter Elbers Quits Citing Personal Reasons; Promoter Rahul Bhatia Takes Interim Charge

Pieter Elbers, the Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, has stepped down from his role citing personal reasons, just three months after the airline faced a major operational crisis that disrupted flights across several Indian airports.

The airline confirmed that Rahul Bhatia, one of IndiGo’s promoters and co-founder of InterGlobe Aviation, will take interim charge of the company while the board begins the search for a new CEO.

Elbers, who previously served as CEO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines before joining IndiGo, had been leading the airline through a period of rapid expansion and increasing competition in India’s aviation sector.

His departure comes in the wake of a major operational meltdown earlier this year, when technical issues, crew shortages and scheduling disruptions led to widespread delays and cancellations across IndiGo’s network.

The incident had drawn criticism from passengers and aviation regulators, prompting the airline to review its operational systems and crisis management protocols.

Industry analysts say the leadership transition comes at a crucial time for IndiGo, which remains India’s largest airline by market share but is facing growing competition from both domestic and international carriers.

With Rahul Bhatia temporarily stepping in, the airline’s management is expected to focus on stabilising operations, restoring passenger confidence and continuing its long-term fleet expansion plans.

The board is likely to begin a global search for a permanent CEO who can guide the airline through its next phase of growth in the rapidly evolving aviation market.
